DirecTV Acquires LifeShield, Enters Home Security Business Acquires LifeShield

El Segundo, Calif., June 11, 2013 — DirecTV is entering the home security and automation business by acquiring Pennsylvania-based LifeShield Home Security.

DirecTV announced on Tuesday it had bought LifeShield for an undisclosed sum. DirecTV said it is leveraging LifeShield's self-installed security and monitoring platform to reach out to consumers starting in early 2014. With an estimated 20 percent of U.S. homes owning security systems, new entrants see plenty of potential growth in the business.

DirecTV is only the latest pay-TV distributor to look for new revenue streams in home security. Cable operators Time Warner Cable and Comcast Corp. have also made moves into the home security sector.

LifeShield is breaking the mold of typical home security with its all new wireless security technology. The company prides itself as the “pioneer” of wireless home security by creating the first all-digital wireless home security system.

LifeShield offers reasonably-priced home security systems that take advantage of the latest in technology—systems that are easy to setup and virtually impossible for burglars or home intruders to defeat.

DirecTV said it will retain LifeShield’s 105 employees, including its CEO, Michael Hagan, and they will remain based in Langhorne, Pa.
