RF-Design Receives Funding for New Future Satcom Technology

Bensheim, Germany, January 26, 2026

Bensheim, Germany, January 26, 2026 –Together with Hochschule Darmstadt (Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences), Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology (EIT), RF-Design has received funding from Land Hessen (the State of Hesse) as part of the LOEWE-Förderlinie 3.

The hdRF project is specifically driving the transformation of the satellite industry from analog to digital infrastructures and enabling their increased use in high-frequency applications. Digitalization allows satellite operators to efficiently expand their services without having to make extensive investments – among other things, through the flexible installation of additional nodes.

The digital domain extends the range of a hub by transmitting the RF spectrum over existing networks and the Internet. Digital transmission and processing of radio frequencies significantly increases system performance: costs for setting up additional hubs are reduced, system architecture is centralized, and flexibility is increased, as multiple locations can be connected via existing network infrastructures. In addition, the digital concept improves scalability and reduces downtime to a minimum. As an additional security component, the digital system can also serve as a backup solution for hubs – for example, in extreme weather conditions, technical malfunctions, or maintenance work – thus making an important contribution to increasing transmission reliability.

The project is led at RF-Design by Ralf Mayr (CEO) and Muhamad Ibrahim (Research & Development Deputy Manager). The project is scientifically supported by Prof. Dr. Ingo Gaspard and Prof. Dr. Michael Kuhn from the Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology at Hochschule Darmstadt (Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences).

This funding not only strengthens our innovative power, but also sustainably promotes Hesse as a center for research and technology. We would like to express our sincere thanks to everyone involved who made this project and the funding possible.
