According to Euroconsult's newly released report, Satellite Pay-TV: Key Economics & Prospects, the global satellite pay-TV industry has observed strong growth in the past five years despite an increasingly competitive TV landscape where IPTV, DTT and connected entertainment services have rapidly expanded their reach. Subscriptions to satellite pay-TV reached 196 million homes in 2013 and revenues topped US$ 97 billion.

TV shipments improved 4% Y/Y in Q3’14, and LCD TV shipments alone rose nearly 9%, according to the latest findings in the Quarterly Global TV Shipment and Forecast Report, produced by DisplaySearch, now part of IHS Inc.

Annual TV shipment growth averaged less than 1% on a unit and revenue basis in 1H’14, with LCD TV growth barely compensating for declining shipments of plasma and CRT TVs. However, a continued strong trend of shipment growth in North America continues to be a catalyst, evidenced by LCD TV growth exceeding 12% Y/Y in Q3’14.

The number of FTA satellite channels in the Arab World reached 762 channels by September 2014. The Arab Advisors Group researched and analyzed the 762 channels that broadcast on Arabsat, Nilesat, Noorsat and Yahlive. Fully operational channels reached 724. The majority of the analyzed FTA satellite channels broadcast in Standard Definition (SD), while only 10.5% broadcast in High Definition (HD).

The consumption of mobile telecom services by consumers is no longer proportional to the revenue generated for mobile operators. In many countries, 4G LTE tariff plans have been introduced at the same price points as their 3G tariff plans. According to ABI Research, the global average traffic generated per user per month will expand from 275 megabytes in 3Q 2014 to 1.85 gigabytes in 2019. Video traffic is expected to reach 65% within 5 years.

The latest edition of the Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) Mobility Report, a comprehensive update on mobile trends leveraging big data from live networks worldwide, launches today and reveals that proliferation of mobile technology continues at a rapid pace: 90 percent of the world's population over six years old is predicted to have a mobile phone by 2020. Furthermore, by 2020 smartphone subscriptions are forecast to top 6.1 billion.

Fastest growth for new mobile subscriptions was found in India and China, with 18 million and 12 million net additions, respectively, in Q3 2014.
