According to Euroconsult's latest report, Prospects for Maritime Satellite Communications, the maritime connectivity market continues to be vibrant, as shipowners transition to the next level of broadband connectivity. The merchant, passenger and leisure segments have all been supporting growth in revenues and capacity usage, while a rebound on oil pricing would accelerate the offshore segment. In addition to capacity, an increasing focus is on the supply of value-added services and on the outsourcing of daily operations by shipping companies.
NSR’s Global Satellite Capacity Supply and Demand, 16th Edition report, released today, confirms despite a challenging current climate for capacity sales, long-term projections are promising with revenues doubling over the next 10 years.
Three-quarters of the world’s pay TV operators will gain subscribers between 2018 and 2024. Covering 505 operators across 135 countries, the Global Pay TV Operator Forecasts report also estimates that two-thirds will increase their revenues over the same period.
Simon Murray, principal analyst at Digital TV Research, added: “The top 50 operators accounted for two-thirds of the world’s pay TV subscribers by end-2018, with this proportion not expected to change over the next five years. The top 10 operators took 45% of the total by end-2018.”

New consumer research from Leichtman Research Group, Inc. (LRG) finds that 74% of U.S. TV households have at least one Internet-connected TV device, including connected Smart TVs, stand-alone streaming devices (like Roku, Amazon Fire TV stick or set-top box, Chromecast, or Apple TV), connected video game systems, and/or connected Blu-ray players. This is a similar level to last year, and an increase from 69% with at least one connected TV device in 2017, 50% in 2014, and 24% in 2010.
Reflecting the rising importance of the telcos, IPTV is gaining subscribers in Western Europe at the expense of the other pay TV platforms. IPTV overtook satellite TV in 2015 and will be approaching cable by 2024. IPTV will add 5.5 million subscribers between 2018 and 2024.
The commercial satellite ground segment market, including satcom applications, EO applications and user terminals for user applications, is going through significant expansion in terms of both capabilities and demand and will grow from US$ 264 million in 2018 to nearly US$ 360 million in 2028.
Rethink Technology Research’s Rethink TV service has launched a new report which shows how Direct to Home satellite TV (DTH) subscriber falls will accelerate and spread from North America to Europe and eventually to the Far East. Where subscribers numbers rise there will be falls in ARPU.
