Our industry is known for innovation. Sometimes this comes from within, from well-established companies, and sometimes it comes from totally outside the industry, as Elon Musk did twenty years ago when he founded SpaceX. This makes trying to write a short article on innovation, all the more challenging, there is so much to choose from! So, I decided to focus on new entrants, but this still left very many interesting companies to choose from. In the end, I decided to limit myself to companies trying to solve a known problem, then rather arbitrarily selected four companies.

The Asia-Pacific market is generating a great impact on the satellite manufacturing and launch market segments. NSR forecasts over US$ 105.7 billion for 9,200 satellites to be generated between 2020-2030 from the region, a quarter of the global satellite orders. The interest in the satellite industry for the Asian market is tangible.

ND SATCOM kicked off the New Year on a high note with a deal to deliver 30 exclusive SKYWAN modems to the Polish Ministry of Defence (MOD). Hellas Sat, a premium leading satellite operator based in Greece, awarded SpaceBridge, Canadian corporation designer and manufacturer of broadband satellite communications systems, the end-to-end VSAT project, consisting of the two VSAT Platforms that will provide fully encrypted satellite communication hybrid platform, simultaneously supporting the Star & Mesh network topology. SpaceBridge will provide two fully redundant Teleports and User Terminals to serve important and critical locations for Hellas Sat end customers.

The South Asian market, comprising the countries belonging to the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) that include Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, is one of the world’s most underserved markets for telecommunications services.  Internet penetration in the region according to the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) is only 39 percent of the population of nearly two Billion as of 2020.  That’s nearly 1.2 billion unconnected people without access to broadband services.  

HISPASAT, the Spanish satellite services and solutions operator and provider of the Red Eléctrica Group, is once again attending the NAB 2022 trade fair this year in Las Vegas to present its new wholesale television solution in an OTT (Over-the-Top) setting. This new service will allow pay television operators, internet service providers (ISPs) and regional content companies to offer their clients a high-quality, multi-screen entertainment service over the internet so they will not need to roll out their own infrastructure.
