Over 25% of Video Viewing Occurs on Platforms Other Than TV

Dallas, Texas, April 11, 2012

Parks Associates research finds over 25% of all video viewing in U.S. broadband households now occurs on platforms other than the television, such as PCs, smartphones, and tablets. The research firm's analysts will discuss the new research during the special session "The Future of OTT Video: Monetization Strategies" at CONNECTIONS™ at TIA 2012 in June.

"One-third of U.S. broadband households streamed a TV show in the past 30 days, and these consumer viewing habits are raising expectations for new service offerings," said Brett Sappington, Director, Research, Parks Associates. "Proliferation of connected CE is both an opportunity for and a potential threat to traditional pay-TV services. New companies are entering this space, offering alternative services and business models that are attractive to consumers. To keep their edge, service providers have to address consumption on these platforms with a clear value proposition."

Parks Associates will host "The Future of OTT Video: Monetization Strategies" on Tuesday, June 5, the first day of Parks Associates' 16th Annual CONNECTIONS™: The Digital Living Conference and Showcase. The conference will be co-located at TIA 2012: Inside the Network, June 5-7, at the Gaylord Texan and includes the Connected Home Pavilion on the TIA exhibit floor.

CONNECTIONS™ at TIA will feature keynote speakers Kevin Petersen, SVP–AT&T Digital Life, AT&T Services, and Mike Ritter, Chief Marketing Officer, Consumer & Mass Business Markets, Verizon.

"Each week, roughly 25% of U.S. broadband households watch video on a mobile phone, and the average broadband user watches 36 minutes of video on a tablet," Sappington said. "At CONNECTIONS™ at TIA, Parks Associates will discuss how emerging OTT services must offer quick access to interesting content, attractive business models, and access on multiple screens and not require purchase of a new, stand-alone device."

CONNECTIONS™ at TIA 2012 sponsors: CEA, IBM, Actiontec, Affinegy, Allegro Software, Digitalsmiths, PacketVideo, Quatrro, Sutherland Global Services, Waterstone Management Group, Irdeto, Sigma Designs.
