The number of FTA satellite channels in the Arab World reached 854 channels by May 2016. The 854 analyzed channels broadcast on Arabsat, Nilesat, Noorsat and Yahlive (fully operational channels reached 821). The majority of the analyzed FTA satellite channels broadcast in Standard Definition (SD), while 2.1% broadcast in High Definition (HD).

Pay TV subscriptions in the Middle East & Africa region will increase by 67% between 2015 and 2021 – from 32.37 million to 54.09 million. The top nine pay TV operators [Multichoice (DStv and GOtv), StarTimes/StarSat, Canal Plus, OSN, beIN, DigiTurk, D-Smart, Yes and HOT], accounted for 70% of these subscribers by end-2015, with this proportion falling to 66% by 2021. So nine companies will continue to control more than two-thirds of the region’s pay TV subscribers, according to the Middle East & Africa Pay TV Operator Forecasts report.

The Asia-Pacific pay-TV industry will grow at a 5.8% average annual rate from 2016 to 2021, according to a new report, Asia Pacific Pay-TV & Broadband Markets, published by leading industry analysts Media Partners Asia (MPA). The pace of pay-TV subscriber and revenue growth is slowing, weakened by an economic slowdown and increasing competition from both legal and illegal alternatives.

The company’s report* states that an increasing consumer appetite for on-demand video services presents an opportunity for operators to complement their core portfolio of services and add new revenue streams. Eastern European OTT TV and video revenues [for 18 countries] will reach US$ 1,976 million in 2021; up from only US$ 26 million recorded in 2010 and $454 million in 2015, according to a new report from Digital TV Research. The Eastern Europe OTT TV & Video Forecasts report states that Russia accounted for half the region’s OTT revenues in 2015 and will remain at around this level for the next five years.

From the $1,522 million additional revenues between 2015 and 2021, Russia will provide $724 million, with Poland bringing in a further $220 million.
