NSR’s Global Satellite Capacity Supply and Demand, 17th Edition report, released today, finds COVID-19 having a deep, near term impact on key satellite capacity growth areas, but the industry will bounce back to 2019 revenue levels in 3 years. Despite near term challenges, NSR is still bullish on long-term potential, forecasting Satcom revenues reaching $26.5 Billion by 2029.
New research from Parks Associates’ OTT video research, from a survey of 10,000 US broadband households fielded in March 2020, finds that 76% of US broadband households subscribed to an OTT video service in Q1 2020, while the churn rate for streaming services was 41%. Sixty-two percent of US broadband households subscribed to a traditional pay-TV service.
In its latest research titled “China Space Industry Report,” Euroconsult provides in depth analysis of how commercialization is driving both growth and technology advances in the Chinese space sector, with oversubscribed IPOs and a wave of private investment. China Satcom is now the world’s highest valued pure satellite operator with a market cap of US$11 billion as of May 2020, while China Satcom parent company China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC) reported record revenues of $37 billion in 2018.
AVOD expenditure will more than double between 2019 and 2025 to reach US$ 53 billion across 138 countries according to Digital TV Research.
The US became the largest AVOD expenditure country in 2019 as China saw expenditure fall by 8.9% due to its economic downturn.
NSR’s Cloud Computing via Satellite report, released today, projects 52 Exabytes of Traffic by 2029, with players in the satellite and space industry contributing cumulative revenue of US$ 16 B from 2019-2029. The market is largely satcom-centric, with a significant portion of the revenue flow going to service providers and satellite operators.
New consumer research from Leichtman Research Group, Inc. (LRG) finds that since the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, 53% of adults ages 18 and above in U.S. TV households agree (8-10 on a 1-10 scale) that they now spend more time watching TV per day, while 16% disagree (1-3).

In its latest research titled, “Prospects for Maritime Satellite Communications,” Euroconsult projects that the previously growing maritime connectivity market will experience a significant setback due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Maritime VSAT connectivity reached an all-time high of 28,200 connected vessels at the end of 2019 but because of the current health crisis, the previous projection of 49,300 terminals by 2023 has been reduced to 40,600 units.
