According to The NPD Group, the average pay-TV subscription for basic pay-TV service and premium-TV channels in the U.S. reached $86 in 2011. As TV program licensing fees have risen, pay TV monthly rates have also grown an average of 6 percent per year, even as consumer household income has remained essentially flat. If nothing changes, NPD expects the average pay-TV bill to reach $123 by the year 2015 and $200 by 2020.

New consumer research from Leichtman Research Group, Inc. (LRG) finds that 38% of all households have at least one television set connected to the Internet via a video game system, a Blu-ray player, an Apple TV or Roku set-top box, and/or the TV set itself -- up from 30% last year, and 24% two years ago. Video game systems are the key connected devices, as 28% of all households have a video game system connected to the Internet.

VT Systems and the Utilities Telecom Council (UTC) released the results of a new study on satellite communications in the utility industry. The study, Strategic Assessment of Satellite Usage in the Utility Industry, was conducted to gain a better understanding of how satellite communications is currently used in the utility industry and to better articulate the benefits of modern VSAT systems. Among the key findings were that 60% of utilities surveyed are already using some form of satellite communications technology.

The number of fixed broadband subscribers reached 586.7 million in 1Q 2012, generating service revenue of $47.7 billion. In 1Q 2012, Asia-Pacific was alone in adding nearly seven million subscribers, most notably by net subscriber additions in China.
