Leading space consulting and market intelligence firm Euroconsult has released the 22nd edition of its annual “Government Space Programs” report this week, evidencing a continued increase in global governments’ space budgets. This year has seen a cumulative spend of $103B in 2022, a 9% increase since last year and a record high for the sector. Despite the recent pandemic crisis, governments have increased their investments in the sector to further support the development of their industry and sustain their ambitions.

The latest update of Satellites to be built and launched released this week by Euroconsult forecasts a fourfold growth in the number of satellites driven by commercial constellations. The market intelligence report, now in its 25th edition, anticipates over 2,500 satellites to be launched on average every year – or 7 satellites a day totaling 3 tons of mass - over 2022-2031. Civil government and defense customers will remain legacy customers, holding the largest market value of US$ 29 billion every year with three-quarters of the demand in manufacturing and launch. The six leading space faring governments or organizations alone (U.S, China, Russia, Japan, India and European governments, EU and ESA) will account for two third of the demand in value.

A new report from Inmarsat and Globant finds existing satellite technologies could save up to 5.5 billion tonnes of CO2 a year. Satellite technologies are already reducing carbon emissions by 1.5 billion tonnes (or 1.5 gigatons) every year, according to independent research report Can Space Help Save The Planet?, commissioned by Inmarsat from leading consultants at Globant’s Sustainable Business Studio. This is equivalent to almost four times the entire UK’s annual emissions in 2021[1] or the lifetime emissions of 50 million cars[2].
