Spanish Companies Develop Satellite Connection Terminal for AVE High-speed Trains

Madrid, Spain, February 16, 2017--HISPASAT, together with other Spanish companies, has developed a satellite-based mobile connection solution used for PlayRenfe, the new Wi-Fi connectivity, content and services platform on-board Renfe's AVE high-speed trains, awarded to Telefónica in November 2015. This solution, developed by Spanish companies, is the only one that has all of the certifications required by train manufacturers, operators and authorities.

Railway operators will now have at their disposal downlink connections of more than 100 Mbps, and will have access to a wide range of services for passengers and crew alike, all of which is made available in such a challenging mobility connection scenario as high-speed travel. The solution developed makes it possible to offer services such as Wi-Fi connectivity, real-time travel information and live TV-an option that no other train operator can offer at present as well as features for control, emergencies and on-board payments.

The most outstanding element of this solution is its low-profile gyro-stabilised antenna, whose three axes of rotation allow it to remain constantly oriented towards satellites Hispasat 30W-4 and 30W-5. Moreover, the low profile of the antenna, which measures less than 40 centimetres, ensures that the train meets the maximum height allowed for tunnels, and reduces the possibility of external impacts which could damage the equipment and interrupt connectivity. Lastly, the anchoring and fastening systems designed by Indra and Aicox adapt to all train models. The entire terminal is covered by a structure built exclusively for this service, whose profile protects the equipment and maintains the aerodynamic design of the cars without hindering the antenna's performance.

A solution guaranteed by satellite

The terminal developed by HISPASAT together with other Spanish companies can be integrated into combined solutions with LTE (Long-Term Evolution) mobile communications networks. Today satellite technology makes it possible to implement broadband services on-board trains, enabling connectivity even at points where terrestrial networks still do not reach. In the medium and long term, satellite connection will guarantee continuous service throughout trains' entire route, as a support to 3G and 4G networks, and will enable access to live television.

Thanks to the combination with LTE technology, high-quality connectivity is maintained without interruptions over the entire route, even in tunnels. In these situations, the train makes use of the terrestrial 3G and 4G networks alone, but after leaving the tunnel the antenna automatically redirects toward the satellite right away so that on-board connectivity is never lost.

Since 2008, HISPASAT has been the main operator in satellite communications services for high-speed trains. Its experience in the European train fleets Thalys and Italo have allowed the company to develop a robust solution that is resistant to all interference produced in such a hostile environment for connectivity as that of a high-speed train.

This product reinforces HISPASAT's portfolio of mobility solutions, which also include maritime and aeronautic applications.
