ITU World Radiocommunication Conference set for Geneva, November 2-27, 2015

Geneva, Switzerland, August 3, 2015–The World Radiocommunication Conference, the international treaty-making Conference, will review the international regulatory framework for radiocommunications – the Radio Regulations – and revise them as needed to take into account the rapid evolution of information and communication technologies (ICT), ensuring that reliable radio services are available  everywhere, enabling people to live and travel safely and enjoy high performance radiocommunications.

The World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC-15), November 2-27, 2015, will be preceded by the Radiocommunication Assembly from October 28-30.

WRC-15, the landmark event for the advancement of radiocommunications, will modify the international regulations on spectrum use in order to enable the sustainable and harmonious development of all systems, services and applications relying on radio frequencies. WRC-15 will address a number of key issues, in particular:

  • Additional spectrum for mobile broadband (International Mobile Telecommunications, or IMT) as well as public protection and disaster relief.
  • Spectrum for the aeronautical sector, related to the use of unmanned aircraft systems, wireless avionics intra-communications, and forglobal flight tracking leading to improved safety and environmental benefits.
  • Maritime communications, facilitating the use of on-board digital transmissions and the automatic identification system, aimed at improved navigation safety.
  • New automobile radar systems for increased vehicle safety.
  • Scientific issues, including earth-exploration satellite services with higher resolution radar images for improved global environmental monitoring, and the feasibility of achieving a continuous reference time-scale (UTC) with the possible suppression of the leap second.”
  • Additional spectrum for satellite systems (including IMT) and updated procedures for the efficient use of spectrum and satellite orbit resources.

 What:

ITU World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC-15)
Radiocommunication Assembly (RA-15)

When:

2-27 November 2015

RA-15 26-20 October 2015

Where:

CICG Convention Centre, 17 rue de Varembé, Geneva, CH-1211.

Why:

The World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC), held every three to four years, will address the regulation of satellite orbit and radio-frequency spectrum resources in the best interest of all end-users worldwide, with global implications for both policy-makers and the industry. The Radiocommunication Assembly will provide the technical basis for the work of WRC-15 and set future work programmes in the field of radiocommunications and approve worldwide radiocommunication standards (ITU-R Recommendations).

Who:

Over 3000 participants from around the world are expected to attend.
