ITU prepares for World Radiocommunication Conference 2015

Geneva, Switzerland, April 1, 2015--The second conference preparatory meeting (CPM) for the forthcoming World Radiocommunication Conference is currently in session in Geneva. Over 1100 delegates from ITU’s 193 Member States and the private sector are examining preparatory studies on the regulatory, technical, operational and procedural aspects of the agenda of the World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC-15), which will take place in Geneva, 2-27 November 2015.

The World Radiocommunication Conferences, held every three to four years, are mandated to review and, where necessary, revise the global radio communications regulations, the international treaty governing the use of the radio-frequency spectrum as well as geostationary-satellite and non-geostationary-satellite orbits. The agenda is determined by the ITU Council  which takes into account recommendations made by previous World Radiocommunication Conferences and which can include issues identified by ITU Plenipotentiary Conferences.

The satellite industry will be closely following the WRC-15 as one of the key isues to be taken up by the WRC is the reallocation of the 3.4-4.2 GHz C-Band frequency spectrum to the terrestrial operators.   The C-Band frequency has been traditionally reserved for satellite use, but growing demand from mobile operators have caused the ITU to consider its reallocation.
